The Dickin Medal
Did you know that animals can be awarded bravery medals? An English woman, Mrs Maria Dickin, instituted the Dickin Medal in1943 to recognise animals that displayed bravery while serving with the armed forces in the Second World War. Who was Maria Dickin and why did she establish the medal? As a class, research her work with animals and find out what kinds of animals were awarded the medal.
Complete one of the following tasks:
TASK 1 Present biographical facts or a news report about Maria Dickin or any animal who has won a bravery award. OR TASK 2 Imagine you are a journalist interviewing Maria Dickin about her life and how she came to think of the idea of a medal for courageous animals. Write down some questions that you would like to ask her. Maybe your teacher could play the role of Maria Dickin while students play the role of investigative journalists. Conduct the interview in a Learning Place chat room and upload the transcript (find out more below). Or record the interview as an audio or video file for uploading. Fo help creating your own chat room, please visit the Communications Help. TIP: There are a variety of different applications you can use to create your replies. These include Publisher or Kidspiration. You may even like to photograph or act out your task and record it as an audio or video file.
Step-by-step instructions on how to upload your reply can be found on the 'Rap notes' page.
