Text formatting problems

What happens when you save text from a Microsoft Word document into a web page?

When you save text from a Word document into a web page, the text content is converted into HTML format.  Included in this process are a number of hidden word function codes which may affect the formatting in your web site.  This may not affect the page formatting until the page is defaulted to the front page - the page default to the front page reflects the first 130 characters into the default box, unless there are word XML tags in the formatting when the first change in tags will be the limit of what is displayed.  ie the display of a heading in bold will only show the heading as the first change in tags (where the next words are not in bold) will stop any more information being loaded.

The easiest way to write text for your webpage is to simply type it straight in - just remember to copy and paste it into a word document for a spelling and grammar check and reflect any corrections in the web page text.

To write text for your web page and still be able to cut and paste the contents you need to use a text editor instead.  First, while still in the Word document, select Save as ... from the File menu and save the document as text.  Then open the document using your system default text editor (usually Notepad or Wordpad), copy and paste into the web page editing box, and then do your fancier formatting from there.

A simple text editor to use is Notepad, which should come with your system. The usual location for Notepad is as follows:

1.    Click on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen to bring up the pop-up menu

2.    Click on the Programs button to expand menu

3.    Click on the Accessories button to expand menu further

4.    Select Notepad and use to write your webpage text or paste text from Word document that has been saved as a text file

5.    Cut and paste into community web page window
