Cowboys in the classroom

Cowboys in the ClassroomCowboys in the Classroom

invites you to participate in this online project
(yr 5 – 7)

This year, Smart Classrooms Mentors have teamed up with the North Qld Toyota Cowboys to bring you the opportunity to be involved in an online project. Throughout this project, students will have the opportunity to interact online with Cowboys players and associated personnel as well as with other schools within the safety and structure of the Learning Place’s online environment.

Focus

About the project

Cowboys in the Classroom is a facilitated project where teachers and students complete a series of tasks individually and collaboratively. These tasks lead to a culminating activity that synthesises student learning throughout the project. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in informal activities such as blogging.

Objectives

  • To enable students to work collaboratively in a safe online environment.
  • To establish and promote school/community partnerships.
  • To foster a partnership with the North Qld Toyota Cowboys as mentors in promoting the value of a healthy life through sport.

How to become involved

Teachers will need to be Learning Place members and register their class’s interest by completing the Cowboy Interest Form (February 23 – February 27) and emailing to cowboysclass@gmail.com. Teachers will then be notified of their success by the following week. Once registered, teachers and classes will be enrolled and assigned class login details. Teachers and classes will then have access to the course.

Requirements

As Cowboys in the Classroom is in its first year of implementation, Project Officers have designed the project for a small number of schools in given geographic areas in order to assess the effectiveness and viability of continuing the project in future years.

Cowboys in the Classroom has been designed for students in years 5 – 7 in schools in the following regions:

  • Mackay/Whitsunday
  • North Queensland (excluding Townsville schools*), and
  • Far North Queensland.

There will be provision for up to 15 places (i.e. classes) for each of those areas.

* The Cowboys are continuing their Adopt-a-school program in the Townsville area.

Duration

Cowboys in the Classroom will be an ongoing project throughout the NRL football season (March – September). There are set tasks and set task completion dates throughout the project. These tasks are not designed to be onerous and are the minimum requirements for your involvement in the project. It is envisaged that some teachers may wish to extend students beyond these tasks and additional ideas have been included as suggestions. Consideration has been given to school events such as holidays, nationwide testing etc so as not to impact upon these times.
