i-support a learner online groups

Students from a variety of schools and locations work together in small groups to collaboratively complete innovative ICTs projects.  A learning group consists of approx 4 to 6 middle schooling students from schools across the state in urban and rural and remote locations.

Students peer tutor others in their class/school/community in the skills they acquire. This helps to build the self-esteem of students in this program while having a positive influence on their fellow peers and school community and is considered a vital part of the program. A higher level of learning develops once you teach something you know.

View an online learning group in action in the Ollie Up overview video.

How to be involved and join an online group

Step 1

Gain an understanding of what the program is about and what is expected by all involved in this program.

All current information maybe found at the i-support website and in the Ollie Up information guide.

http://education.qld.gov.au/learningplace/isupport

Step 2

View the timetable at the i-support website to determine lesson times and availibility. Contact the faciilitator directly to discuss the program further, including the enrolment procedure.

Step 3

Select school contact officer, study coach and student. Careful selection is important (see Roles and expectations in the Ollie Up information guide).

Please note:
Students will learn various skills as part of this program and will be expected to use these skills to tutor their peers. This link between the Ollie Up program and the student’s regular class is essential and helps students to see their self worth, for fellow peers to see this worth, while providing schools with rich examples of ICT integration.

Step 4

 Awareness raising in the school

School i-support officer, teachers of Ollie Up students, study coaches and students in the Ollie Up program are to be aware of their role as outlined in this Ollie Up Information Guide.

All school staff to be informed of the school’s involvement in the program and how the program operates. Important to emphasise the proactive nature of the program and how all staff may play a role by:
• Praising and encouraging Ollie Up students and their achievements.
• Valuing the program as an important part of the student’s curriculum and not using Ollie up as a reward or taking it away as a punishment.
• Using Ollie Up students as peer tutors in any classroom in the school. The more these students are given opportunities to demonstrate their expertise the more likely we are to improve self-esteem and gain associated benefits.

Ignorance to the program can lead teachers to wonder why these particular students are receiving such a treat when other students are missing out.

Step 5

Complete necessary forms (See Appendices 5-8 in the Ollie Up information guide)

  • Form 1 – Required details. Schools to send data via spreadsheet to your facilitator. The facilitator will then send this information to the Learning Place to finalise the enrolment. Ollie Up should be in the subject line.
  • Form 2 – Parent student consent completed and filed at school.
Consent form and schedule completed by the school principal, i-support officer, teacher of i-support student, students, study coach and any other person participating in this program. These consent forms and schedules are to be completed and filed at your school.
  • Form 3 - School confirmation in Ollie Up completed and faxed to 3421 6628.

Step 6

Organise physical set up, including hardware and software (see Ollie Up information guide).

Step 7

Organise test run of physical set up with i-support team or your facilitator. This should be completed well before students begin lessons.
