an overview

Machinima is very unique.  It is an entirely new idea. I had never considered the possibility of using a game to create art before.  You can get surreal effects and mix them with other techniques (such as animation) to create visually exciting works

Machinima has thoroughly engaged the students in our Visual Arts classes. I have had to relocate from the staffroom to the multimedia lab at recesses as it has become a buzzing hive of activity with up to thirty students creating and sharing their work. It is fantastic seeing their energetic approach to filmmaking.

Making Machinima > An Overview

When making Machinima, it is suggested that you follow these steps:

6 steps

Below is an overview of what happens in each step. For more detailed information on how to carry out each step, check out these sections:

Step 1. Script
Writing the script and planning your Machinima Movie is essential. The main ingredients to a good script are having a good story and strong characters. Some techniques for starting the script writing process include brainstorming and visualising. This script planner (word doc - 44 kb - new window) may assist you in developing your script.

Step 2. prepare
Prepare for filiming your Machinima movie by:

  • refining your script
  • storyboarding your script
  • organising equipment and software
  • choose and research the game you will use - play it and work out how you will capture the required footage
  • making your sets
  • deciding what jobs need to be done and who will do them.

Good preparations can save time in the production process and reduce frustration later.

(ACMI 2008, p. 41)

step 3. rehearse
Just as human actors need rehearsal time, rehearsals are also required for making Machinima movies. This is especially necessary if you are creating Machinima using a game in multi-player mode.

step 4. capture
Capture the footage from the game play.

step 5. edit
Edit the footage you captured in step 4 using video editing software. At this point, you may also like to add visual effects, sound effects or a sound track.

step 6. publish
Share your Machinima creation with your audience. This can be done electronically via a website or at a live event or via CD or DVD. You may also like to publicise your movie by creating a poster, a website, uploading it on public websites, writing a review or ask others to write a review.
