GNU – The GNU General Public License is a free, copyright license for software and other kinds of works.

Excerpt only - The licenses for most software and other practical works are designed to take away your freedom to share and change the works. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change all versions of a program--to make sure it remains free software for all its users.

Open Source - denotes that a product includes permission to use its source code, design documents, or content

Excerpt only - licenses must meet ten conditions in order to be considered open source, these include: the source code must either be included or freely obtainable, redistribution of modifications must be allowed, licenses may require that modifications are redistributed only as patches, no one can be locked out, commercial users cannot be excluded, The rights attached to the program must apply to all to whom the program is redistributed without the need for execution of an additional license by those parties, the program cannot be licensed only as part of a larger distribution, the license cannot insist that any other software it is distributed with must also be open source, no click-wrap licenses or other medium-specific ways of accepting the license must be required.  

Creative Commons  - the spectrum of possibilities between full copyright  (all rights reserved)  and the public domain (no rights reserved).

Excerpt only - the license keeps the copyright while inviting certain uses of your work — a “some rights reserved” copyright.

Freeware – free to use for an unlimited time.

Excerpt - Freeware is copyrighted computer software which is made available for use free of charge, for an unlimited time, as opposed to shareware where the user is required to pay (e.g. after some trial period or for additional functionality). The license may be "free for personal, non-commercial use." Everything created with the freeware programs can be distributed at no cost (for example graphic, documents, or sounds made by user).

Limited – Specific licensing details are applicable to this software. License details should be thoroughly investigated before installing software on any computer.

MOE and installation

An Orange card holder or equivalent will be required to install new software. Be sure to check licenses throroughly and ensure suitability of software for student use. Some applications listed above are included in the MOE build and may already be accessible at your school.
