Literacy Outcomes and the Role of the SLP (LORS) Project

The LORS Project was conducted in 2005-2007 and explored issues in identifying, defining, collaborating and reporting on literacy outcomes for students and the implications for speech-language pathologists’ role in early literacy.  This project highlighted the requirements of the workplace as a key factor in the roles that SLPs take within schools and how SLPs report the results of their work.

The LORS Project consisted of an extensive literature review, following a cohort of students through Years 1, 2 and 3, and the development of materials for SLPs and teachers to demonstrate the value and nature of SLPs work within early years classrooms.  An initial report was produced in June 2007 and revised in March 2008.

Please feel free to use these materials below within your Education Queensland schools with appropriate acknowledgment to the LORS Project.  If you have any questions about the LORS Project please contact Regina Walsh regina.walsh@deta.qld.gov.au or Gaenor Dixon at gaenor.dixon@deta.qld.gov.au

Conceptual Model of Language (46 K) - Type: Adobe Acrobat file
This Conceptual Model for Language and Related Constructs (Draft 6, 2007) was developed by Regina Walsh and Kelly Stassi to articulate our own conceptual model of these constructs. It provides an illustration of our definition of language, and how it links to cognition and literacy. Language is the symbolic representational system underlying both spoken and written codes. SLPs have an important role in supporting the development of this underlying language system for spoken, written and other codes for use in communication. This version is current as of May 2007. An updated and final version (Revised 2008) is available in the LORS Project Report Revised March 2008 file on this same page.
