Spelling is a developmental process. Teachers need to plan and teach the explicit strategies to help students spell in a variety of contexts.
The 2009 District English Program includes a Spelling scope and sequence based on the EQ Spelling Scope and Sequence. This is intended to guide teachers’ planning of the yearly spelling program. The ‘Concepts to be consolidated’ are those taught in previous year levels. Explicit teaching of the elements in the ‘Focussed Teaching’ Column needs to take place along with teaching of the ‘Spelling Strategies and Knowledge’. Space is provided to tick off Terms 1-4 to ensure all the focus concepts have been covered in the year.
See the Link to the District English Program for the full version of the Spelling Scope and Sequence.
The Year level Spelling List or Data Collection Tool is found at the end of the document. It provides 1-2 words for each focussed spelling concept. THIS DATA COLLECTION TOOL IS NOT INTENDED TO BE USED AS A WEEKLY WORD LIST. TEACHERS NEED TO CREATE CORE WORD LISTS EACH WEEK TO MATCH THE FOCUS SPELLING CONCEPT. The EQ Spelling CD rom can assist teachers to creat these lists.
