Teachers need to be active participants in online projects for the project to have successful outcomes for their students.
Steps for a Partner Teacher
- When you receive your approval (you have a password), visit the site with your students and ensure your details are up to date. Those details are seen by other participants and people who visit the site.
- Liaise with the Owner Teacher to set your students up in appropriate teams. Each team is responsible for developing up to 10 web pages.
- Your students may be working with students from other schools so ensure they know how to use the message board and the editing tools.
- Ensure you and your students understand the project, their roles, tasks and timelines.
- Use each project task as a focus for learning in other curriculum areas.
- Check your Curriculum planning and timetable to book Internet access.
- Ensure your students have the skills and logins to use the site. If you require more student logins contact the Owner Teacher. If your students already have Learning Place logins they can use those userIDs - just let the Owner Teacher know.
- Make sure you value add to the learning program where ever possible. Your students will enjoy the project and will have many ideas to improve their learnings.
Steps for a Team Manager Team Managers are responsible for regularly checking and approving web pages in your team spaces. Please ensure that photos are cleared for copyright (written permission). After approval, the web pages can be viewed by anyone on the Internet so a high standard is required.
Check the message board daily and support your team members by using great teaching strategies. You can access these tools by logging onto the project site control.
TIPS
Please make sure you:
- regularly check the Project site,
- check and respond to your emails daily,
- ensure your students complete the project tasks on time,
- share your students' work with other participants (use the Teacher note section),
- engage your students in discussions and activities (use the message board), and
- taking part in online chats and forums.
Students become very 'passionate' in online projects and usually take a strong position on particular questions. These are wonderful 'teaching moments'. Online chats with experts (eg authors) also increase their understandings and challenge them to think outside their comfort zone.
Please remember:
It is important that the Team Manager regularly checks their student team spaces and approve their work. The teacher must check:
- Parental approval is given for any pictures used on the web pages
- Appropriateness of content
- Quality of the student's writing and web page display
- Check size of media to ensure that all images, video and sound will be easy to download (keep these as small as possible (eg images should be less than 30K if possible)
