RAP point starters

Rap point starters are sample questions that adapt to suit your curriculum needs and outcomes. Based on applying Bloom's Taxonomy by Joan Dalton. (Dalton, J. & Smith, D. (1986) Extending Children's Special Abilites - Strategies for primary classrooms" p36-37)

Knowledge

  • Make a list of the main events, characters, plot twists, etc... and record them on a timeline.  Explain the reasoning behind your choices.
  • Develop a collection of favourite lines, quotes, phrases, etc... from the piece.

Comprehension

  • Develop a series of diary entries that summarises the chapters of the book or scenes of a movie.
  • Substitution - rewrite the lyrics of a song or key parts of a plot to change the intention of a piece of music or storyline.  Alternatively, give a song, movie or book a new title which would make people think differently about it.
  • Construct an alternative... beginning, conclusion or twist in the piece.
  • The next event... describe the plot or idea behind the next book, movie or song in the series. What would the sequel's plot line feature?  what happens to the characters?
  • The chat room... Imagine you met ............... in a chat room.  Construct the dialogue between all the participants.

Application

  • Write a letter... to a character in the book/movie/clip asking them to justify a particular stance or action.
  • Develop the job description or application... a production company may use to cast a character from the book/movie/song.
  • Complete a passport... for characters from the book/movie/film
  • Promotion.. create an advertising compaign to market the... book/movie/film.  List the key points from the book/movie/film that you will use as the foundation of the promotion.

Analysis

  • Design a set of clothes.... fashion wardrobe for a particular character. Extend this wardrobe over time to demonstrate their evolution and maturation. Discuss your selections to explain your choices?
  • Develop a map or diagram that outlines a key location within the piece.  Create your own key and scale.
  • Survey and graph.  Develop a survey about ........... and plot your findings on a graph.  Analyse your responses and share them with the group.

Synthesis

  • Image if... ......... was set in a different time zone, or had opposing character traits, for example: was evil, not good, nice and not nasty, etc. Write how this would have effected the book/movie/song and what changes do you think would have resulted.
  • Invitations... What if the character was to hold a party and anyone dead or alive could be invited.  Who would be invited and why? Compile the list and explain your selections.
  • Design and/or adapt... a mode a transport, a piece of art, a recreational hobby or sport... that you think you would encounter in the piece.

Evaluation

  • Recipes... based on your understanding of ............. from the book/movie or song.  Create a list of their favourite recipes.  Justify your decisions after each recipe. 
  • The Moral... Does the piece have a moral? If so, what is it and explain how it is relevant to you in real life.
