A Rap is a discussion on a particular book, film, music piece, game or other object, item or entity. The central idea is that students engage in substantive dialogue about Rap Points. These are higher order thinking questions posted to the Rap site once a week (usually Monday) by the Owner Teacher.
Participants view the Rap Point and have one week to answer the question (on Friday). Only one answer is usually allowed per class however your answer could have multiple components and points made, depending on the year level and/or the students' abilities.
A good Rap Point will engage the students in research, debate, perspective taking and will allow for healthy argument on a topic or point of view.
Through participation in a Rap project students:
- discuss questions with other students outside their school;
- learn from experts in the field via chats and forums;
- identify issues, behaviours and concepts related to environmental, historical, social or ethical areas
Rap process A Rap usually lasts 4-6 weeks. Before the Rap begins make sure your students have a good understanding of the resource eg they have read the book or watched the film or listened to the music and lyrics.
Week 1: Rappers (students) introduce themselves via the Rap COP.
Week 2: Rap Point 1 is posted to the Rap COP by the Owner Teacher. Rappers submit their answer during the week.
Week 3: Rap Point 2 is posted to the Rap COP by the Owner Teacher. Rappers submit their answer during the week.
Week 4: Rap Point 3 is posted to the Rap COP by the Owner Teacher. Rappers submit their answer during the week.
Week 5: Rap Rap Rapup... A final activity that summarises the learnings.
If the Rap continues an extra week (due to popular demand), ideas, writings, music and art could be be shared between Rappers.
