Basic HTML rules

HTML rules

There are a few rules that go with using html tags:

  • They are easily differentiated from the text on the page because they are enclosed by angle brackets (less than and greater than symbols) e.g.

  • Most tags come in pairs and contain the text that they affect within them e.g. the html tag is the code for italic, so Hello will italicise the word Hello

  • The pair of html tags are arranged into opening and closing tags, e.g. opening tag and closing tag, which is shown by a forward slash / and shows the html code where the tag finishes

  • When using more than one tag at a time on a section of text, there must be a first open, last closed rule i.e. a tag located inside another tag must be opened and closed inside the other tag, in exactly the same way as brackets are used, e.g. {[( )]}   An illustration of this rule is shown when selected text is bolded , italicised and underlined , in that order, and the tags would be arranged like this;  SampleText and would appear on the web page like this; SampleText. Please note that underlining is not always a good idea on the internet, as it can be confused with a link.

  • Exceptions to the 'pair' and 'open/close' rule are tags which stand on their own, such as
    a single line break, or
    a line across the page

While html pages have a basic structure such as tags for html, heading, body and title, etc, these functions are automatically created by the Edit Text box, so you have no need to worry about them.  If you are interested in looking at these functions, you can read about them on the What is HTML? pages of the Developer's Guidelines area of the Online Learning section of the Learning Place
