What is Stepping Stones?
Smart Futures!

Stepping Stones is part of i-support and is a career education course that addresses careers education and school-to-work transition issues.

The aim of this initiative is to assist schools to support "at risk" students and students in schools with limited access to guidance services. i-support does not replace existing services in schools, but provides additional opportunities and resources for those students most at risk of not completing 12 years of schooling.

Students suited to the course are those that demonstrate one or more of the following risk factors:

  • attending a rural or remote school, particularly a P-10 school
  • limited access to career education and counseling
  • at risk of a poor school-to-work transition
  • at risk of non-completion of Year 12
  • difficulty in coping with the mainstream school system
  • at risk of underachieving in literacy and or numeracy
  • learning difficulties or
  • at risk behaviourally.

Course content is delivered using online learning technologies through the Virtual Schooling Service, Brisbane School of Distance Education and the Learning Place. Lessons are both

  • synchronous, when students are connected at nominated times with their teacher and other class members by teleconference and internet, and
  • asynchrynous, when students are expected to complete work independently. Work and activities are downloaded from a Blackboard (TM) site.

The course consists of modules from the Certificate 1 in Work Education (Table 1). From 2007 the course has been revised and newly accredited. It will also be possible for some students to work towards a Certificate l in Work Readiness.
