After selecting the particular web page you wish to edit, the web page management page opens showing all of the available tools to be used when adding or editing content.
These editing tools are listed below with a brief explanation of what they can be used for. More detailed instructions on how to actually use these editing tools can be found on the following web pages. There is no spellcheck function provided with the system, just copy and paste the text into a word document and spellcheck it there before finishing.
- Edit text boxes found under the Dynamic text content heading- where the text for the page is written or edited. Described in more detail on the previous web page Adding content to a web page.
- Add Child Page found under the Child web pages heading on the edit tools page - this is where another page on the same topic may be added to the previous page. This subject extension of the previous page is called a child page.
- A number of other editing tools appear under the Other web page elements heading - these are Page image, Page Gallery, FAQs, Files for Download, Links to Web Sites, Paper References, Page Notices, Page Polls, Text Blocks, Map Gallery, Preview Page and Flash Image. These editing tools are described in more detail below, while instructions on how to use them can be found in the webpages following in this section.
- The last three editing tools appear under the Other options heading - these are Page Layout (choice of templates for the layout of the page), Edit Page Name (simply rename page and update), and Delete page from site (when you are finished with the page and wish to delete it).
A Brief description of the page editing tools:
Page image - You can make a page more interesting and newsworthy by adding a photograph or image. You can select radio buttons that give a choice of having the image appear to the left or the right of the screen, rotate the image, or return to this section to remove the image.
Page gallery - This is a similar editing tool to the Page image button, except that instead of a single photo appearing to the left or right of the page, a group of images may be added to a web page, appearing at the bottom of the page as a selection of thumbnail images. Clicking on the image opens a new pop-up window in which the image is displayed in a large format.
FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) are used when a particular page or topic on a page triggers a very common question from page visitors, or is considered likely to. Questions and answers appear in the FAQ format (question in bold, separated from answer) at the bottom of the page and are listed in alphabetical order, so if control over the order is required, each FAQ should be numbered.
Files for Download - This page editing tool works in a similar way to the Document Store site section, except that it stores any downloaded documents on the actual web page itself. Used when a document of particular importance relates to the text on that particular page. An alternative would be to store the document in the Document Store and just link to Document Store from the page, which would also make the file easier to find for those visitors who are used to finding such documents in the Document Store.
Links to Web Sites - This tool for adding web links works in the same way that the Web Links site section does, enabling a short description of the web site to be linked to, except that it is used to place a web link at the bottom of the actual web page concerned (not to be confused with manually placing a link in the page text itself via the text editing box). Remember to always ask for permission to link to that site from the site administrator first.
Paper References - used for when referring to a journal or article, asks for resource title and description which then appear at the bottom of the page.
Page Notices - used to add a note to the web page to draw visitors attention to new or important details. Appears as a box on the right hand side of the page.
Page Polls - can be used to gather feedback, indicate level of topic interest, conduct a quick quiz, or to give your visitors a little fun. You can add a poll to any page and each poll can have up to 6 answers. The results are collated and arranged in a graph for users to view.
Flash Image - a dynamic Flash image can be added to the upper middle of a page to give it a bit of a lift. Just remember to watch the file size or most viewers will have to wait too long to see it.
